Hey! You've found a corner of my brain I never thought I would make public.
This page is home to my atomic essays –– short, barely-edited mini-blogs which I am writing to build a daily writing habit. It also allows me to think and write in public. This is by no means my most polished work! Instead, this is a brain-gym which I'm using to exercise my mind and find new ideas and topics that I want to write about.
My Writing Story
When I was at school, I was told by multiple teachers that I 'wasn't the greatest writer'.
In fact, one even told me that I needed to find a job that allowed me to talk, because if I ever had to write I would never amount to anything. From that point on, I made it my mission to become a better writer.
Fast forward almost 10 years and I now love to write. I went as far as to co-author a book while I was at university. I've looked for opportunities to write since but never fully scratched the itch. I tried writing at my old job, but the process was too... bitty. I could never find the time, and I always felt like it was detracting from what I was being paid for.
Since I quit my job, I've found another outlet in PopNeuro, a Neuromarketing blog that aims to educate the public on how neuroscience and marketer's tricks influence the brain.
In an attempt to further improve my writing, I've joined Dickie Bush's Ship 30 for 30 Cohort, in an attempt to solidify a writing habit. I'll be writing an atomic essay (more on this in a minute) every day for 30 days.
What the hell is an atomic essay?
What am I writing about?
I wish it were as easy as three simple bullet points, but it's not. I love the idea of being a deep generalist, and as a result I'm going to be writing about a range of topics. However, I spent some time trying to group them, and I think I've succeeded.
- Behavioural Science – From mental models and decision-making to Neuromarketing
- Pop Culture – A deep dive into my favourite films and TV shows
- Life – Musings about my own life or interesting people I've read about
